The GDCh Division of Environmental Chemistry & Ecotoxicology was founded in November 1990, has around 850 members and deals with the interactions between chemicals and the environment (environmental chemistry). On the one hand, this involves describing and understanding the entry routes, distribution and transformation of substances in the soil, water and air compartments, and on the other, characterising their effects on organisms and habitats (ecotoxicology). The subject area is highly interdisciplinary and offers research and employment opportunities to people with knowledge from the fields of chemistry, biology, geosciences, law, engineering and other related disciplines. Intensive subject-related work is carried out in the four working groups of the Division.

At European level, the Division supports the activities of the Division of Chemistry and the Environment of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS).
