The prize, endowed with € 1,000 and sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, is intended to promote chemistry in science lessons at primary schools. Since 2009, it has been awarded to primary school teachers who have distinguished themselves through special achievements in strengthening the scientific and technical elements of science lessons, particularly the chemistry-related elements, at primary schools.

The prize, endowed with € 3,000 and donated by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, is intended to promote chemical education. It has been awarded since 1982 to teachers who have distinguished themselves through special achievements in the field of chemical education in schools.

Founded by Degussa AG, now Evonik Industries AG, Essen, and endowed with €4,000 and the Heinrich Roessler Award, the prize has been awarded since 1984 to a person from school, university, industry or public life for special services to chemical education. The prize is named after the first technical director of Degussa, who made pioneering achievements in the field of science education and training in the 19th century. The prize is awarded every two years.

The prize was awarded in 2005 and 2007 to young European scientists who were in the academic qualification phase, had already completed their qualification phase - e.g. doctorate or habilitation - or had reached a first professional position.
